Humuhumunukunukuapua`a!

'A'ole pilikia Carla!

Mahalo to Following Moondance, kids were challenged to research the pronunciation Humuhumunukunukuapua`a!
Humuhumunukunukuapua`a is Hawaii's state fish!

Kids have been intrigued with Hawaii as they've been studing state capitals and facts. They knew the state bird plus lots of fun state facts, but never learned about the state fish! They know the Hawaiian alphabet only has 12 letters, but this word starts with "H" and has a bunch of letters.

So, how does one pronounce: We found two suggestions:

"who-moo-who-moo-noo-koo-noo-koo-ah-pooah-ah."

"hoo-moo/hoo-moo/noo-koo/noo-koo/ah-poo-uh-ah".

Kids and I also found a YouTube High School Musical 2 (YouTube video) that did a fun job of teaching us how to pronounce, if only we could stop dancing!

Then, we also found a Don Ho (YouTube video) singing humuhumunukunukuapua’a a few times in My Little Grass Shack!

Hope this helps our sailin' friends in Hawaii! love, us

Oh, we loved this post! Thanks so much for helping us learn how to pronounce the Hawaiian state fish. We got a big kick out of listening to Don Ho sing about the Humuhumunukunukuapua`a! Guess we need to buy his CD's so we can learn even more Hawaiian. What a great idea. Thanks again for looking out for your sailing friends in Hawaii! Love Carla and Doug
